Silicon Glen
1978 into 1979. Scotland's western islands languish
in winter. Britain is undergoing industrial crisis - the winter of discontent.
For the mainland, strikes are an annoyance. For the Arran islanders,
the ferry blockade is catastrophic. A community is marooned.
Best friends Murdoch and Hugh feel even more
stranded. On the cusp of adulthood, their world is already fraught with
trepidation and danger.
'Silicon Glen' captures the atmosphere of pre-Thatcherite
rural Scotland to perfection. There are also universal themes. The novel
is affectionate, brimming with interesting characters, frequently hilarious,
but also focusses on issues - such as government plans to use the island
as a nuclear dump. 'Silicon Glen' is 'Whisky Galore' for the modern
age.
